The Linda Stanier and Family Memorial Award for Excellence in Ceramics2012 recipient, Jim Etzkorn, Medicine Hat
The award was presented at the annual Alberta Craft Council awards ceremony November 3, DaDe Gallery, Calgary Alberta.
Jim Etzkorn has been a practicing potter, educator and mentor in Alberta for over 30 years. He was born in Edmonton, graduated from ACAD and had studios in Canmore and Calgary for 25 years. Jim furthered his knowledge of ceramics by attending residencies at the Banff Center, the Archie Bray Center in Helena, Montana, I.W.C.A.T in Tokoname, Japan and the Medalta International Artists in Residence in Medicine Hat. During his career he has held several solo exhibitions, participated in numerous invitational and group juried shows. Jim has had his work published in a variety of books on ceramics, including ‘500 Vases’ and ‘Making Marks’ and is included in numerous collections including the IWCAT Collection, Tokonami, Japan, Medalta National Historic Site Permanent Collection, and the National Palace Museum Collection, Taipei, Taiwan.
This annual endowed award celebrates the life of Linda Stanier and honours excellence in ceramics. The nominee should work and reside in Alberta and be primarily a studio-based, full-time professional ceramic artist. A couple that works together on the same work may be considered as one nominee.
